We’re very lucky to have Capoerista Shiva join us from the Mumbai-based Centre for Capoeira India which is affiliated to the Capoeira Cordao de Ouro.
Here are the benefits of practising Capoeira:
Strength: Capoeiristas are always moving around on their hands – handstands, rolls – all of which dramatically improves upper body strength. They also perform many jumping kicks and movements that improve leg strength.
Flexibility: Some Capoeiristas are on par with yoga practitioners in terms of their flexibility.
Cardio and stamina: Intense Capoeira games can require enormous amounts of energy. This, combined with constant repetition of movements and techniques, makes Capoeira a valuable cardio exercise.
Active brain: It is a well-known fact that increase in brain activity occurs during exercise especially in areas of the brain dealing with thinking and memory. Coordinating muscle contractions, vision, balance, organ function and all of the complex interactions of bodily systems – Capoeira moves demand a lot from the brain.
Capoeira can also improve your social life! You will:
Meet new people: When you join a Capoeira group, you become part of a family. You will meet people from all walks of life, and you will definitely make new friends along the way.
Learn a new language: You may not become fluent (although that’s always a possibility), but there is no doubt that you will come to understand and perhaps speak a bit of Brazilian Portuguese.
Immerse yourself in a new culture: Capoeira is deeply connected to Brazil. In a time when many martial arts are reduced to aerobic workouts and cookie-cutter moves, Capoeira maintains all of its roots and traditions.
ABOUT SHIVA
As a dancer Shiva learnt about Capoeira from another dancer who was also a Capoeirista. He started searching for Capoeira in India and that is when he found Prof. Baba. Sacrificing his lifestyle in Delhi he moved to Mumbai for two years and completely dedicated himself in training. He has taught at the Centre in Mumbai for three years. Shiva says, “There is no single reason for me to not love capoeira, it gives me everything. I love the music, dance, fight, emotions, feelings, happiness. Teaching capoeira changed my life. When I teach, I not only impart the knowledge and skill of capoeira but also learn from my students in the process.”
